NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover, packed with new technology, safely touched down on Mars’ surface on Feb. 18 after completing a 203-day journey through space. Next on Perseverance’s to-do list: search for signs of ancient microbial life and collect rock samples for a future sample return mission.

Operating 293 million miles from Earth in the extremes of space, component failure is not an option. For years, Crane Aerospace & Electronics has supported space missions with its industry-leading DC-DC power converters. Crane A&E’s space product line has never suffered a field failure. It’s a habit Crane A&E looks forward to continuing with Mars Perseverance.

"Not only are these converters highly precise, they are built to withstand the harsh environment they encounter from launch to mission completion. We are proud to be a trusted supplier of NASA JPL and to contribute to the Mars Perseverance platform."

Crane A&E has a rich history of supplying the Mars Exploration Program. Product has been supplied to Perseverance’s rover predecessors: Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity. Crane A&E has also contributed to Mars Insight. Crane A&E’s latest contribution is more than 20 DC-DC power converters and Electro Magnetic Interference (EMIL) filters to manage the low voltage power that runs many of the systems required to help Perseverance.

“Our DC-DC converters provide a very accurate and highly regulated power source to highly sensitive Mars Perseverance systems,” said Joseph Mundinger, Crane A&E VP & GM of Modular Power. “Not only are these converters highly precise, they are built to withstand the harsh environment they encounter from launch to mission completion. We are proud to be a trusted supplier of NASA JPL and to contribute to the Mars Perseverance platform.”

Perseverance is scheduled to spend at least one Mars year (687 days) on the Red Planet. In addition to seeking signs of ancient life and sample collection, Perseverance will explore its geologically diverse Jezero Crater landing site and demonstrate technology for future robotic and human exploration.
