Boeing selects Tire and Brake Monitoring System from Crane Aerospace & Electronics

LYNNWOOD, Wash. – March 13, 2006 – Crane Aerospace & Electronics, a Crane Co. segment, has been selected to supply the Onboard Tire and Brake Monitoring System (TBMS) for the Boeing 777. The TBMS will replace the current system on all follow-on 777 aircraft. First deliveries of aircraft with the new system are scheduled for 2007.

The TBMS monitors the tire pressure and brake temperature of each wheel and displays that data in the flight deck. Using Crane Aerospace & Electronics’ new SmartStem(R) wireless technology, the system operates by replacing the existing tire inflation valve stem with a wireless valve stem that senses and communicates tire pressure, temperature, and other stored information to a control unit onboard the aircraft or to a handheld reader.

SmartStem(R) technology was designed to provide an easy, accurate method of maintaining proper aircraft tire pressure – very important both to aircraft safety and economics. Both the on-board and handheld versions of SmartStem(R) make the daily tire pressure check quick, easy, accurate, and automatically documented. A reading takes about one second.
