Centrifugal Pumps Brochure

Hydro-Aire and Lear Romec design and manufacture a wide range of high performance centrifugal fuel pumps for commercial and military airplanes. From small fractional horsepower D.C. boost pumps used on business jets and small commercial transports to large multi-horsepower A.C. jettison pumps used on large commercial transports and military aircraft.

Centrifugal pumps operate using kinetic energy to move fluid using an impeller and a circular pump casing. The fluid enters the pump near the center of the impeller and is moved to its outside diameter by the rotating motion of the impeller. The vanes on the impeller progressively widen from the center of the impeller that reduces speed and increases pressure. This allows centrifugal pumps to produce continuous flows at high pressure.

The Crane Aerospace & Electronics Centrifugal Pumps are used for:

  • Fuel Boost Pumps

  • Fuel Override/Jettison Pumps

The Hydro-Aire AC motor-driven fuel pumps are available in fuel tank mounted or canister configurations. There are over 25,000 of these proven fuel pumps currently in service, as shown in the table on the right.

The principal design features of the Hydro-Aire fuel pumps are:

  • Mixed flow, single or double inducer/impeller for pumping volatile fuel at high aircraft climb rates

  • Flow rates up to 40,000 lbs/hr (120 gpm)

  • Reprime capabilities

  • Output pressure up to 28 psig

  • Power supply: 3 phase AC, 115/200V, 400Hz

  • Non-resettable thermal fuses

  • Excellent dry run characteristics

  • Ease of service: Quick motor-impeller subassembly removal and replacement
    without draining the fuel tank

  • Wet motor design: Fuel lubricates bearings and cools the electric motor

The principle design features of the Lear Romec centrifugal pumps include:

  • Tank, spar, or line mounted

  • Cartridge/Canister or single housing variants

  • High altitude and inverted flight capability

  • Fully submerged operation

  • Explosion proof electric motors

  • Self priming

  • Dry run capability

All designs can be customized to fit your requirements. Our pump designs can incorporate the following motor capabilities:

  • Fixed And Variable Frequency A.C. Motors

  • Brush Type and Brushless D.C. Motors

  • 270 VDC Motors

  • Hydraulic Motors
